August 16 and 22nd, 2014

This is the Dobbin's House and Tavern. The home was built in 1776. From the balcony of this home the residents could watch the Gettysburg address by Lincoln just a few hundred yards away. Over the years it was used as a Theological Seminary, Classical School, and a liberal arts college. Reverend Dobbin was a pastor and served Gettysburg as the leader of the Presbyterian minister in the Rock Creek Church. This home was also instrumental in the underground railroad, hiding and sustaining runaway slaves who were escaping north.

Today the basement servers as a pub and restaurant. Marion and Karen believe that the best onion soup ever is served here and that is why we visited it twice.

We toured the home after lunch on our second visit and we saw how they provided shelter for the runaway slaves. This room is located between the floors and had a hidden door. The room was big enough to hold maybe 6 or 7 people uncomfortably and 3 comfortably.
