July 2 - The City of Presidents

Karen and I (Marion) visited downtown Rapid City, SD as the guys were doing maintenance on the coaches.....washing, installing a new light, etc.  Since the Monuments are near by, the city decided to turn Rapid City into the City of Presidents and have put life size statues of every President, all done from private donations.  Every corner has a President on it.  Rapid City is the only place in the world where all the Presidents can be seen in life-size bronze statues.  Here are a couple of samples below.  Over the years, the City of Presidents has provided a platform for many causes.  The statue of Dwight Eisenhower has been a gathering place for veterans who place flowers and messages at the statue on D-Day.  As a side note, last year, we visited Eisenhower's farm,,in the midst of Gettysburg,  that he retired to after his Presidency.  In 2010, Dennis and I also visited his Kansas birth home (and museum) that the family donated after their deaths. This is also where President Eisenhower is buried.

Other monuments are also scattered throughout the city.

Someone put flowers on this statue.

The guy in the Presidents Information Center was veeeeerrrry talkative and friendly and gave us lots of incite into the why and how the statues came about.

They were having a festival with a band and booths that started just before we left to go home.
