July 3 - The famous Town of Sturgis for bikers and the wild west town of Deadwood, SD

This is the famous bar that is on a Reality Show every year.   I've never seen it as I don't watch reality shows.   The bike rally isn't until August 3 - 9, but we want to be out of here by then, as about 6,000 bikers come here for the rally as you can see in the poster board picture above.

When we first sat down, we thought this donkey was stuffed because the buffalo in the next picture was.  Emmitt (we later found out his name) stood very still next to the water air cooler for about the first 20 minutes or so.  He was right behind Karen and to Myron's right side.  Then, he moved his leg and swished his tail.  Still thought they had animated him.  haha.   And then he started walking around looking for food from everyone. Watch him hug up to people.  The story is, the owner bought him for his daughter and she wasn't pleased with the gift so he just hangs out around here.

What a happy group! I guess we're scoping out the place   hehe.  The excitement didn't start until Emmitt started walking around.

aaahhhhhh.

Onward to Deadwood, a wild west town where Wild Bill Hickok and Wyatt Earp and others roamed.  Deadwood sits deep in a valley, surrounded by the mountains.  As you will see in the pictures below, the mountains are right up to the back of the buildings.  Beautiful setting.  When we were here last time, we stayed at an RV park where a forest fire had come right to the edge of it before they got it stopped.  The town could have burned as the park was just behind some of these buildings.

Coming into Deadwood

The hill in the back with just tree sticks, is where the fire was in 2010.  the RV park was just below it.

In the wild west years, The Franklin Hotel was the only luxurious hotel between the East coast and West coast.  Presidents and other dignitaries would stay here.  Dennis and I stayed here in the mid 1990's.  The names of who stayed in each room is listed on the doors.

Pictures of Deadwood in the early years

Kevin Costner owns the Midnight Star.  We had lunch on the second floor. Very good and very reasonable.  Good place to eat if you come here.

Being from North Dakota, I loved this movie and could watch it 100 times.  It was filmed near here.

We were getting ready to watch a re-enactment of a gun fight.

 All the kids were deputized!

Wild Bill was shot from the back while gambling. He was holding a winning hand.

The jail was under the sidewalk, which was wood back then.  The Sheriff would bring them down these stairs to the jail.  Is now a gift shop.

Also watched an Indian dance on the street

Absolutely breath taking views as you look out from the life size statues.  Again, the pictures do not do it justice.
