July 6 - Rapid City Trolly Ride, Christmas Store, Dances With Wolves

We took a tour on a trolley around Rapid City, SD.  Rapid City is at the edge of the Black Hills and has great views from lots of areas of the city.  The Dinosaur Park was at top of a high hill with curvy roads to get to the top.  The views were awesome.  Would love to go up there after dark to see the lights of the city.  I took some pictures of the views, but as usual, pictures do not really capture the actual height and beauty.

The Rotary Club built this Storybook Island and is free to all.  Great place to brings kids.

We visited the Christmas Village.  They have just about any Christmas decoration you would ever want.

This was a huge chunk of glass made to look like ice

I think this was someone's home in the early days.

I am a big "Dances with Wolves" fan so had to stop when we seen a sign saying free tour.  These buildings were used in the movie as the Fort Hays Headquarters, supposedly at a location near Caputa, SD, east of the city.  The buildings were taken apart and reassembled at this location.
We also, were able to see where the last scene was shot (winter scene), in the Spearfish Canyon, that you will see in tomorrow's post.  Karen and I also drove to Caputa, but wasn't much there, however, the landscape was much like it was in the movie, so was probably filmed near there.  The lady in the gift shop told us we really needed to go to Spearfish and drive the canyon.  We are so glad she told us about that as it is the most breathtaking drive we've ever been on. We also got to see where the ending of the movie was filmed!
